Handmade in a Village
Refuge International is currently working in remote areas of Guatemala where many of the people are subsistence farmers or fishermen and have little or no source of income. One of the ways we hope to help the people in these villages is by the purchase of items that the people can make using local materials. Many of these people are true artisans. Please know that your purchase of these items helps families send their children to school, buy food and other necessary items. The project Handmade in a Village hopes to help others help themselves.

These beautiful and unique baskets are handmade by the women in Cerro Blanco, a remote mountain village off of the Sarstun River in Guatemala. Each is unique and the designs are of animals or plants they see in the jungles surrounding their village.
The baskets are made of banana leaves and corn husks that are ground up and formed into the basket and design. A special vine is used to decorate the edges.
The women of Cerro Blanco thank you for your purchase of these items. Cerro Blanco is a village of subsistence farmers and your purchase allows them to have a small income.
(Sizes are approximate, as they are handmade and dimensions will vary a little.)
