Medical Missions

Refuge International currently has medical missions traveling to San Raymundo, Chocola and Sarstun, Guatemala and Kenya, Africa. There are a total of six to seven medical missions a year with varying group sizes.

San Raymundo, Guatemala

ALERT! New Travel Guidelines for San Raymundo!

San Raymundo is located in the highlands one hour northwest of Guatemala City. Our groups of volunteers - physicians, nurse practioners, dentists, surgeons, nurses, translators, pharmacy staff, construction workers and other ancillary personnel - operate a week long clinic in a free-standing hospital. The trip is from Saturday to the following Sunday. We travel to Antigua for a nice hotel stay at the end of the trip. Refuge goes to San Raymundo the last weeks in February and October of each year.

Chocola, Guatemala

While working with one of our partners on the Adios Lombrices project, Refuge International volunteers were led to a hospital/clinic in a remote village near Mazatenango, in western Guatemala. Dr. Sergio Castillo has been working alone for the last 12 years in Chocola, serving the people living in the area. Refuge International has agreed to help supply medical equipment and will take medical, surgical and construction teams several times a year to help this amazing man do what he has been called to do.

Kenya, Africa

Volunteers with Refuge International have made two medical mission trips to Kenya. In collaboration with Orphan Grain Train, we have been able to send medical equipment and supplies that are greatly needed in this impoverished African country. Refuge International teams work closely with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya (ELCK) to help six remote clinics near Kisumu, in western Kenya. These mission teams have also worked in the Matongo orphanage, supplying needed infant formula and general pediatric care. They have worked in an ELCK clinic on the edge of Nairobi, the largest slum in Africa, where the poorest of the poor exist. Your cash donations will allow us to buy necessary supplies and medications to help the people of Kenya.

Sarstun, Guatemala

Sarstun clinic under construction

Sarstun is a small aldea (village) located on the Sarstun River, which forms a portion of the border between Belize and Guatemala. There are no roads in or out of Sarstun, making it accessible only by water, like many of the surrounding villages. The nearest town is 1 1/2 hours away by boat. A clinic/hospital was recently opened by Refuge International, thanks to the generosity of many donors and another nonprofit organization, Faith in Practice. A health care provider working full time will be available to help the more than 12,000 Mayans living in the area. Ongoing support is needed to maintain this wonderful facility, as there is little or no source of outside income for the people living there. This medical mission trip is very challenging physically and is not the trip for anyone with physical constraints.
